I got an e-mail from a friend of mine in Butte that I thought should be shared. I trust the source, it's a true story that needs to be taken seriously. I thought our blog would be a great place to make sure that people hear about it. This is the e-mail that I got (with names removed).
Dear Family & Friends,
Two weeks ago I got a call from our FBI friend’s wife (also my counselor in YW) for permission to discuss Internet Safety to our youth. Earlier that day her husband got a call from the Salt Lake City FBI asking if he knew the whereabouts of one of our Young Women. She was safe at home. They arrested a man in SLC for the murders of 80+ girls. As of two weeks ago they had almost 90 bodies in connection with this man. They found that he had several pictures of several girls with one target being the girl in our YW. This man was in our town last month with no “business” being here. This is still under FBI investigation and details have not been released yet.
So, how did he get her information? Believed he “Hacked”(not invited) into her Facebook account & downloaded pictures & collected information about her whereabouts. PLEASE be very cautious as to what you post on the internet even on password protected sites. Do NOT post any future plans, scheduled events, pictures that could be used to arouse, name of schools, home address, phone #’s. Also check the backgrounds of your photos to be sure house #’s & other identifying info is not there. Be cautious not only of what your kids are posting but also what you might be posting about them. I am still sick to my stomach & on the verge of tears when I think about this and how close we could have come to looking for another abused dead body whom I call friend.
The thought of this happening in Butte, Montana really scared me. The thought that this young girl could have been gone before she even knew she was in danger. Just be careful of what you post and remember that others can see things that you post even if you don't invite them to see them. There are always ways around these types of things for those who know how.
